Even though Tam was the first person who came to my mind that I should interview, Tam and I had not talked for a long time. We only chatted a little from time to time via Facebook over three years. We were both busy working and studying, which made us to be too far away to connect with each other face-to-face. So when I met and interviewed her, I was surprised to find out a lot of news from her which I was not expecting. Because she is not a professor or have her own website about herself, the basic information that I knew about her personally was all that I got. So I set the theme for the interview as “freedom of music.” It was because before I interviewed her, I thought that she is still majoring in nutrition and still continuing to make music with her group, the HUMS. I wanted to focus on how she can continue to make music even though she is studying and trying to start a career outside music.
A few years of not talking face to face made us feel distant. Tam only had a short amount of time, so we started to talk immediately. As we were talking to each other before the video recording, I found out that my theme was not appropriate for this interview. Because she changed her major from Nutrition to Music Education a few months ago. I knew that she has a real passion in music and I was so glad that she finally made up her mind to be a teacher and a performer together. Then I thought to change the interview to be about her group, the HUMS, her life as musician and how she creates her music in general. It was a relief for me because Tam was my best friend and she would understand and be supportive about the interview. I told her that my theme has been changed then she was interested and helped me out with some new ideas. We thought that it may be better to cut every single question at first to take some time in between questions. Then, Tam suggested that it would be better if we just talk freely because if our conversation was cut for every question, it would be feel smooth.
Even though I knew about her as a close friend, having interview was difficult than talking to her casually. I had to remember the questions what I wanted to ask to her. At the same time, I had to listen to her so that I can ask her related interesting questions from what she was saying. I believe video recording also gave me and Tam more difficulties. However it was very interesting to listen and find out new questions from her which I did not prepare but found out during the interview. It was really interesting to talk to your friend and find more about her. I was proud to have a friend who is so passionate about music as a musician and we can share and talk about the music easily whenever we want to.
